Sigmind.ai’s Vision Transformer Tackles Dhaka City Traffic Woes

A new AI-powered software called TrafficFlow has been launched by Sigmind.ai, a Bangladesh-based artificial intelligence company, with the aim of addressing the traffic congestion challenges faced by the bustling city of Dhaka. TrafficFlow is designed to provide real-time traffic management solutions for urban environments.

The software boasts the ability to classify 25 different categories of vehicles specific to the Bangladeshi context, enabling enhanced monitoring and control of vehicular traffic. Its capabilities encompass vehicle detection, color classification, license plate recognition, and optical flow-based speed and direction estimation, according to the startup.

Abu Anas Ibn Samad, the CEO of Sigmind.ai, stated, “We have successfully implemented our software in various places so far. It is currently used by many authorities, including BEPZA, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, CAAB, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board, among others.”

Key features of TrafficFlow, as highlighted by Samad, include multi-directional vehicle counting, vehicle speed estimation, wrong-direction vehicle identification, and standalone reporting systems for comprehensive traffic analysis. The software can provide accurate reports based on traffic analytics, leveraging its end-to-end vehicle analytics capabilities powered by specialized deep neural networks.

Samad explained that unlike traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), TrafficFlow utilizes Vision Transformer (ViT) models for enhanced robustness and accuracy in diverse scenarios. The system’s ‘Recurrence sorting method and Deep learning-based Re-Identification’ (ReID) tracker ensure precision and reliability in license plate identification and vehicle tracking, even under challenging conditions.

The Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) initiated a pilot project with TrafficFlow in September 2020, and the software is currently in use at the Dhaka EPZ and Karnaphuli EPZ. A representative from BEPZA stated, “EPZ has many vehicle movements in a day. Vehicles with goods need a gate pass to enter the EPZ area. We mainly use the software for security purposes to ensure proper vehicle movement and maintain a database.”

Established in 2017, Sigmind.ai’s vision is to democratize the power of modern AI, leveraging technology to ease people’s lives and enhance human capabilities. With a team of 17 individuals, the startup is committed to delivering solutions that redefine the possibilities of AI-driven technology in Bangladesh and beyond, according to the CEO.

In addition to winning the National ICT Award and APICTA Awards, the company has strategic partnerships with organizations like Robi Axiata Limited and Vehant Technologies Limited, as well as affiliations with companies like NVIDIA and Google Cloud.
