    Condé Nast and OpenAI Forge Landmark Content Licensing Deal, Embracing AI’s Role in News Discovery

    The publishing powerhouse Condé Nast has announced a multi-year licensing agreement with the artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI. This partnership will allow OpenAI’s platforms, including the widely popular ChatGPT and the prototype SearchGPT, to feature content from some of Condé Nast’s most renowned brands, such as Vogue, The New Yorker, Bon Appétit, Vanity Fair, and Wired.

    The deal, which was revealed in an internal memo from Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch, underscores the growing importance of embracing new technologies while ensuring fair compensation for intellectual property. “It’s crucial that we meet audiences where they are and embrace new technologies while also ensuring proper attribution and compensation for use of our intellectual property,” Lynch stated.

    The partnership between Condé Nast and OpenAI comes at a time when the publishing industry has faced significant challenges in the digital age, with many technology companies eroding publishers’ ability to monetize their content. Lynch acknowledged this, noting that “over the last decade, news and digital media have faced steep challenges as many technology companies eroded publishers’ ability to monetize content, most recently with traditional search.”

Lynch emphasized that the revenue generated from the partnership will be used to “continue to protect and invest in our journalism and creative endeavors,” a crucial move to sustain the high-quality content that Condé Nast’s brands are known for.

    The agreement also reflects OpenAI’s commitment to working collaboratively with news publishers. In a statement, OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, expressed the company’s dedication to ensuring that as AI plays a larger role in news discovery and delivery, it maintains “accuracy, integrity, and respect for quality reporting.”

    This partnership is the latest in a series of deals that OpenAI has struck with various media organizations, including The Atlantic, News Corp, and a growing list of publishers from around the world, such as Axel Springer, LeMonde, and Vox Media. These agreements aim to integrate the benefits of OpenAI’s AI-powered search and content processing capabilities into the user experience, while also addressing the concerns of publishers regarding attribution and compensation.

    However, it’s worth noting that OpenAI has faced some legal challenges in the past, with digital news sites such as Raw Story, Alternet, and The Intercept filing copyright infringement lawsuits over the company’s methods of utilizing publishers’ content.
