Bangladesh Embraces AI with Caution, PM Vows Preventive Measures

Bangladesh is ready to welcome the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, but the government is also taking proactive steps to prevent its misuse, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated during a meeting with Archbishop Kevin S. Randall, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Bangladesh, at her official residence Ganabhaban on Sunday.

“We welcome AI, but we have to take some protective measures by enacting laws to prevent its misuses,” the premier told the visiting envoy, as briefed by her speech writer M. Nazrul Islam after the meeting.

As the world rapidly embraces AI and its potential to revolutionize various sectors, concerns have been raised about the technology’s ethical implications and the need for proper regulation. Bangladesh, a country known for its progress in the digital realm, is taking a balanced approach, recognizing both the opportunities and challenges that AI presents.

Addressing the religious harmony that prevails in the nation, Prime Minister Hasina highlighted how people of different faiths coexist peacefully in Bangladesh. “Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists are living here in harmony. We celebrate our festivals together,” she said, emphasizing the country’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and tolerant society.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister extended an invitation to Pope Francis to visit Bangladesh, relaying the invitation through Archbishop Randall. Such a visit would further strengthen the bonds between the Holy See and the people of Bangladesh, fostering greater understanding and cooperation.

Archbishop Randall, in turn, commended Bangladesh’s stance and efforts on addressing pressing global issues like climate change and the Rohingya refugee crisis. The country’s proactive role in tackling these challenges has garnered international recognition and support.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Secretary, Mohammad Salahuddin, was present during the meeting, underscoring the importance the government places on fostering strong diplomatic ties and addressing crucial matters of national and global concern.

As AI continues to advance rapidly, Bangladesh recognizes the need to strike a balance between embracing its potential and implementing safeguards to mitigate potential risks. The government’s commitment to enacting laws and regulations to prevent the misuse of AI reflects a responsible and forward-thinking approach to this transformative technology.

By taking proactive measures, Bangladesh aims to harness the benefits of AI while ensuring that it is developed and deployed in an ethical and responsible manner, safeguarding the interests of its citizens and upholding the values of transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights.

The Prime Minister’s remarks underscore the country’s determination to navigate the AI revolution with wisdom and foresight, leveraging its capabilities for economic growth, social progress, and the betterment of its people while proactively addressing potential challenges.

As Bangladesh continues to embrace technological advancements, the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and harmonious society, protecting the environment, and addressing humanitarian crises remains unwavering. With a balanced approach and a clear vision, the nation is poised to reap the rewards of AI while upholding its core values and priorities.
