Dhaka: Artificial intelligence (AI) cameras have been installed on the streets of the Bangladesh capital dhaka to bring order to traffic. This system will be able to file cases automatically if the law is broken on the road.
Such AI signal systems have been installed at Gulshan-2 signal, and it has been announced by the North City Corporation that they will be installed at six more points in the capital.
The tendency of drivers in the capital to break the law, such as illegal parking, driving against traffic, and obstructing pedestrian crossings, has transformed the traffic situation into a chaotic state.
An anonymous traffic police officer revealed that if a vehicle triggers the red light while the camera is active, a case will automatically be initiated.
Even if the vehicle’s license is expired, it will be recorded by the camera.
How do AI cameras work?
- These cameras scan vehicle number plates and match them with a database.
- If a vehicle breaks a traffic law, such as running a signal, driving in the wrong lane, speeding, etc., the camera will take a picture and store it in the database.
- The traffic police will then identify the owner of the vehicle and file a case.
Advantages of this system:
- It will help improve traffic discipline.
- It will help reduce the number of accidents.
- It will make the work of the traffic police easier.
- It will encourage drivers to obey the law.
Criticism of this system:
- Some people think that this system violates personal privacy.
- Others have expressed concern that this system could create opportunities for corruption.
However, the government believes that the benefits of this system far outweigh the criticisms.
This system is expected to bring about a revolutionary change in traffic management in Dhaka.
The CEO of Dhaka North City Corporation, Mir Khairul Alam, stated that currently, no penalties are being imposed in this regard. Although information on traffic law violations is obtained, the city corporation is not currently able to enforce penalties. This is because the responsibility of imposing penalties lies with the police, and coordinating this system with the police’s Delta-3 system is still ongoing. Once the coordination is completed, enforcement of penalties will be possible. Gradually, this system will be implemented throughout the entire capital.
This is a significant development in the effort to improve traffic management in Dhaka. The AI cameras are expected to help reduce traffic congestion, accidents, and fatalities.
