    Amazon Turns to Anthropic’s Claude AI for Revamped Alexa Ahead of Holiday Season

    Amazon is set to unveil a significant overhaul of its Alexa voice assistant in October, with the revamped version powered primarily by Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence models. This shift comes as the online retail giant seeks to enhance the capabilities of Alexa, particularly in light of its previous struggles with in-house AI technology.

    The new iteration, dubbed “Remarkable,” will be available for a monthly subscription fee ranging from $5 to $10. This premium version aims to leverage advanced generative AI to handle more complex queries and offer an enriched user experience. In contrast, the existing “Classic” Alexa will remain available for free, retaining its core functions such as setting timers, playing music, controlling smart home devices, and responding to general questions.

    Amazon’s decision to integrate Claude into Alexa’s upgraded version reflects challenges encountered with its proprietary AI models. Initial tests of the new Alexa, using Amazon’s own software, reportedly faced performance issues. The voice assistant sometimes experienced delays of up to six or seven seconds in responding to user prompts, according to sources familiar with the development. These performance hurdles prompted Amazon to turn to Claude, a chatbot developed by the AI startup Anthropic, which demonstrated superior responsiveness and efficiency compared to Amazon’s models.

    The move underscores Amazon’s strategy to improve Alexa’s performance and viability as a revenue-generating tool. Despite Alexa’s wide range of functions, including integration with Amazon’s Echo devices and smart TVs, the platform has struggled to drive significant sales or achieve profitability. Amazon has consistently aimed to boost revenue through Alexa by encouraging users to make purchases via voice commands. However, these efforts have largely failed to produce the desired financial results.

    In response to these challenges, senior management has emphasized that 2024 is a critical year for Alexa. The revamped paid version of the voice assistant is seen as a key component in addressing the division’s profitability issues and ensuring Amazon remains competitive in the AI and smart home market.

    An Amazon spokesperson addressed the company’s approach to integrating different AI technologies in a statement to Reuters. “Amazon uses many different technologies to power Alexa. When it comes to machine learning models, we start with those built by Amazon, but we have used and will continue to use a variety of different models—including Amazon’s Titan and future models, as well as those from partners—to build the best experience for customers,” the spokesperson said.

    The partnership with Anthropic represents a notable departure from Amazon’s traditional preference for in-house technology development. Historically, Amazon has preferred to develop its own technology to maintain control over the user experience, data collection, and customer relationships. However, this new collaboration mirrors industry trends where major tech companies, such as Microsoft and Apple, have also turned to external partners to enhance their AI capabilities. Microsoft, for example, has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its products, while Apple has also leveraged external AI technologies.

    Anthropic, in which Amazon holds a minority stake, chose not to comment on the development, highlighting the strategic nature of the partnership.

    The release of the “Remarkable” version of Alexa is poised to be a pivotal moment for Amazon as it seeks to capitalize on the upcoming U.S. holiday season. By offering a more advanced and responsive AI assistant, Amazon hopes to attract new subscribers and drive meaningful revenue growth. The company’s commitment to incorporating Claude into Alexa’s functionality reflects a broader effort to enhance its voice assistant’s performance and ensure its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.

    As the launch date approaches, all eyes will be on how the integration of Claude impacts Alexa’s performance and whether the new subscription model will help Amazon achieve its financial goals for the year.
