The 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas has firmly established artificial intelligence (AI) as the most prominent technology of the future. AI innovations took center stage this year, powering everything from household appliances to autonomous electric vehicles.
Samsung made a splash right out of the gate with their “AI for All” vision that aims to bring intelligent assistants and features to their entire product line. The crown jewel of their CES showcase was a game-changing smart refrigerator that identifies food items placed inside it and provides interactive recipe suggestions on its display. Thanks to its AI capabilities, the fridge helps reduce food waste while making home cooking easier.
Complementing Samsung’s refrigerator was their new smart washing machine equipped with computer vision that can automatically detect fabric types and select the optimal wash cycles. This AI-powered laundry assistant takes the guesswork out of doing the laundry.
Samsung wasn’t the only one applying AI to upgrade the home. LG debuted a compelling line-up of friendly home robots to handle household chores. From vacuuming and mopping hard floors to preparing meals, LG’s bots aim to save families time and effort. Perhaps the most endearing robot they displayed was a cute companion bot to keep children engaged. It can play games, tell stories, provide educational content and even gently patrol the home while parents are away.
CES 2024 also highlighted artificial intelligence’s versatility in personal electronics. Dell and HP led the charge by unveiling laptops with adaptive performance. For example, Dell’s new XPS 15 features AI that dynamically reallocates system resources as workloads change, optimizing application performance. HP took a different approach with their latest Spectre x360 model that applies AI to automatically adjust display brightness using built-in light sensors. Such capabilities deliver better experiences while extending battery life.
AI has also found its way into the latest mobiles announced at CES. Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S30 flagship phone will leverage AI to tailor device settings to the user’s location. Meanwhile, Apple’s first peek at the iPhone 14 revealed AI-enhancements that self-tune display brightness based on real-time ambient light conditions. AI is now making phones smarter and more contextually-aware than ever.
Electric vehicles were among the most eye-catching announcements at CES 2024. Multiple manufacturers unveiled AI-powered autonomous EVs designed specifically for ridesharing services. These self-driving taxis are rolling computers, using AI chipsets for navigation, object avoidance, traffic pattern recognition and advanced trip optimization. They foreshadow a future when AI-driven robotaxis will be commonplace.
NVIDIA gave attendees a sneak peek into that future with their “Drive Sim” demo. Their virtual reality simulator let users experience what it would be like travelling in a fully autonomous vehicle. The VR demo leveraged lidars, cameras and a powerful AI co-pilot named “Molly” that handled all aspects of driving. From planning routes to obeying traffic signals, Molly wowed riders by smoothly piloting the simulated car using just her virtual self.
For technologists, AI has clearly transitioned from abstract academic research into a versatile technology used to enhance numerous products. CES 2024 offered concrete evidence that artificial intelligence will broadly impact people’s lives in the years ahead. From the latest smartphones to intelligent service robots in homes, AI advancements are already creating more personalized, contextually rich and frictionless experiences.
Moving forward, expect AI to increasingly work behind the scenes invisibly. Whether it’s pre-configuring the applications you use most often or dynamically adjusting your refrigerator’s cooling to better preserve produce, AI will quietly optimize technologies to anticipate people’s needs before they arise. CES 2024 provided a compelling glimpse into a future where AI subtly operates in the background to empower people to live better lives.
